smog equipment

From the curve Rob presented it looks like the Engineers have been improving their skills over the years. Aren't computeres and fuel injection wonderful. Phil

yup, computer controlled fuel systems and ignition systems have done more for the environment than their bolt-on mechanical counter parts of the 70s and early 80s. Not only that but the engineers over the years have come to the realization that if it flows better it'll perform better, and as a net result they get better volumetric efficiency and better combustion which leads to more performance and better fuel efficiency.

If you're dead set on equipping your cars with cats, EGR & Gulp valves, and Smog pump, it would be a wise decision to also modify the cylinder heads on these engines to improve intake and exhaust flow, and even possibly the combustion chamber to improve combustion. Then take it one step further and utilize fuel injection and electronic ignition.

Oh, I didn't read the post above, and thought the chart was British Leyland's sales figures from 1977 to 1981. hehehehehehe.

to regain focus.....

So that we don't lose sight of the original question....

I think the point is that there are pro and cons of removing emissions systems, and some of the arguments are debatable.

i hope our debate was constructive in helping the original poster make a decision.

If anyone would like to continue some of these tantalizing debates on another thread, I'll be happy to participate.

WOW - I started this thread because I was questioning the value of spending 100 bucks on a air pump. Doesn't seem like such a big question now. I will do what I feel best about and hope to sleep well at night.

I will say that on my two previous MGB's (a 78 and a 79) after removing the air pump and associated crap there was definately a perceptable difference in performance. I don't agree with those who said you can't feel it or you would need a dyno. Now, it is by no means a huge difference, and it's not like a B is a fast car either way by any modern standard, but the engine does rev faster and more freely and just feels much less "choked" especially at higher rpm's. I also put the emissions stuff BACK on one of the cars before I sold it, and I could REALLY feel the difference in performance then. It felt like I was driving around with the parking brake pulled up about two clicks.

Chuck it all. But "I" didn't say that. - hehehehehehehe.

And the charcoal canister isn't really something you want to get rid of. IMHO.

Airplanes, helicopters, small boats, motorcycles & 4-wheelers don't have cats.
Or race cars, old cars & diesel cars.
Don't know about trains or big boats.

First thing I do after buying a car is "de-gunk" it.

It all just blows over to Jersey anyway.
(And they have genetic resistance to toxins) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

A lot of that stuff is made out of aluminum.....
Back here in Appalachia, inspection mechanics will take it off for free. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes JJbunn, California and federal law requires smog equipped vehicles to remain as delivered for their year. The other CA people are steering you correct!!---Fwiw--Keoke
