TR6 Smiths volt gauge needle barely moves

You can see the bimetallic strip behind the pointer in pic 5 of the original post--it is partially covered by the pointer, but it's still there. The green wire powers it.

Magnetic meter movements are very different; the pointer is attached to a coil of very fine wire, which rotates in a magnetic field. If you want to find out more, do a search for D'Arsonval meter.
 
I replaced all of my TR4 gauges with Auto meter sport comp gauges. I pried of the bezels and replaced them with smiths chrome ones and they look sharp, I also opted for full scale gauges rather than half scale ones (except for voltage which is not available in full scale).

That is very good to know as I am considering doing much the same thing to the gauges in my Healey. Also, Moss now has for sale what look like exact electronic replacements for the original 100 mm mechanical tach and speedo, both of which are cable driven.

Rod - Those are great - I was looking around and the 120mm 4.75" Tach/speedo is an uncommon size. I'd like to get better looking bezels than the partly-black stock bezels on my '74.

Did you get the 120mm bezels from Nisonger?
 
I think I got the bezels from eBay. There's a guy "the gauge shop" or something to that effect that sells them on eBay and on his webpage (he's in the UK).
