Smiths Tachometer

Has anyone had success rebuilding a Smiths tachometer? My meter functions as it works with 6V applied to its' leads. I replaced the 2.2 mF capacitor (it was factory installed with the polarity reversed). The single transistor is faulty. The transistor recomended is a 2N393. I will try to use a NTE126 as a replacement. Any imput would be appreciated.

It works !!! A u/s Smiths tach can be fixed..One capacitor and a transistor is all it took.. I made up a cable so that the tach would operate in the passenger seat. Using the variable resistor the tach was adjusted to read 3300 RPM at 60MPH... It reads close now through out the speed range using 17.9 MPH per 1000 RPM in 4 th gear. The speedometer was varified at 30 and 60 MPH using two other new cars.

Nah, Western Canada doesn't start until at least Manitoba!! Just like Hull is still Quebec, even though it is right on the Ontario border!!

Western Canada is up island from you Gary....In sunny Nanaimo. Not in the ocean as the B will not float.. Still to good to be a boat anchor..

Gary & Jim1971 you are both wrong. I may be a Yank, but Western Canada starts and ends on Savary Island between June and September. The rest of you can stay south in the rain. javascript: x()
