Smith's PCV

Hi,

Twice now my '70 Spit has given a little burp when I tried to start it after sitting for a week or so. This little burp pops the Smith's valve out of its seat (it is a push in fit) producing a massive vacuum leak which makes the car not start. When I reseat the valve it starts right up. I suppose I could drill the manifold and put a set screw to hold the valve in place but I am thinking that it must be too loose and may be the source of a vacuum leak even when seated. I will squirt some starting fluid around it to check for leaks.

Any ideas on how to fix this without a set screw?

I had a similar thing happen many, many years ago on my '69 Mk3. The gang at the local service station offered to fix it. All they did was use a small punch and hammer to carefully peen a few spots on the inside of the hole on the manifold just enough to more firmly grip the valve, after which they tapped it back into place. It never moved again after that!
