Wife and I were at an event out at the airport the other day and saw this chopper flying around. It's a "Robinson" Model R44 II (I looked it up). Belongs to Redhills Corp (I think construction) out of Colorado. Had my Canon SX50 (50x optical zoom) and managed to get this close up and personal shot.

Looks like the pilot spotted your camera , as he is giving you a fine grin.

never been in a helicopter, but it looks fun.

When I was a young LT in the AF I was assigned a a radar evaluation engineer. One of the many jobs I had during that duty was to survey several locations along the east coast of Baffin Island and Labrador to determine the best locations to place a series of unmanned radar sites for the Joint US/Canadian North Warning system. We maintained two or three base camps starting at Cape Dyer on the arctic circle. Each day we would jump in a Bell Jet Helicopter and fly to different mountain tops to spend the day surveying the local terrain as well as the horizon and intervening terrain (to later determine effects of the terrain and surrounding landscape on radar coverage).

Anyway, on the very first flight (and my first ever in a helicopter), we experienced a massive oil leak shortly after T.O. and had to do an emergency landing. That was fun! A couple hours later, after the mechanic had cleaned off the oil from the copter and replaced a bad seal, we were right back in the same copter heading out for some distant mountain top.

The pilot was Ed Pruss. His great Uncle was Max Pruss (of Hindenburg fame)
 
The Robinson is the single most UGLY rotor-wing aircraft ever.

And helicopters were designed from the very drawing board forward for just one purpose. To KILL you. Too many hours in 'em having survived some crazy stuff by sheer luck to believe otherwise.

I can't argue about it being a rather ungainly looking thing!
 
And they "chirp" distinctly. I can tell when one is flying around here.
