small wooden gaskets for 1500 engine.

I have a similar post in the spridget forum but figure some triumph knowledge may help. The small slabs of wood that fit between the aluminum block and the engine block on a 1500 motor (At the front under crank) Can these be sourced from a hardware or lumber store? Anyone know the type of wood and size? In a crunch and have all the other gaskets to fix my problem on hand but these.

Scott: I cannot help with the part(s), themselves.
But I do want to tell you that in a gasket kit, I
received two small pieces of wood, larger than the size
to fit my needs. So, I proceeded to cut the wood
and it split along the grain of the wood to a size that
was not usable any longer.

Just thought I'd share that with you. Further, I
used the wrong tool, like a pair of scissors, just to
get it close. Didn't work.

Moral of the story: He that uses wrong tool, ends up
with size material that sucks cause it doesn't fit.

So, you get em, be a bit more careful than I was. Now
I'd get a tool to hold it and cut with, like, a small
hack saw or something.

I don't know what type of wood is used for the shims but I don't think I would want to use door shims. The shims that came with my gasket set seemed to be oak or mahogany, something close grained with small pores and relatively hard. The pine of the door shims seem like it be too soft and porous.
 
Both the 30 year old shims that came out of my engine and the new ones that went in were soft pine. The need to be soft enough to be forced in. After they are in place trim the height with a chisel. When they get hit with engine oil, they will swell up a bit for a good seal.
 
I just got a Payen gasket set from BPNW. The kit had the rubber seals, which I cannot get to go in. They are going to send me some of the wooden blocks to try. I threw out to old ones. Seems the rubber ones have to be put into the saddle block and then installed into place. Too late for me as I had already installed the saddle block with gasket sealer.

Good idea about the paint paddles.

Someone in the midget forum shaved these rubber ones down and used some permatex. Said were fine. I actually added a PCV valve today run threw my breather tank. No more oil leaks YAY! also seems to have a substaintial power gain. Think the negative crancase pressure is what I really needed.
