Hi, I just had a garage built, and was able to get an air operated hoist to fit on an I beam I was wondering if anybody has a crane set up in their garage that can be portable and not take up so much room, I need some ideas, thanks stinky /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif
 
There was a guy over at https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/index.php? who made his overhead crane where it pivots...the entire "I" beam is mounted solidly to one wall & the opposite end is on a roller...he stores it against the wall but can swing it out so its across his garage or partially when he needs to hoist an engine....he can also run the hoist from one end of the "I" beam to the other.....you might have to do a search over there or just ask about it.
 
Tony, that is one excellent idea outstanding, I've been racking my brains out on this one. Why I could'nt think of somethin sooner because I use 20 to 50 ton cranes at work everyday,thanks again Bob
 
GREAT! When you get it figured out, lemme know...my neighbor gave me an overhead hoist & I want to mount it to an "I" beam in the same way in my new "Midget Room".
 
Because of my low headroom, I made two hangers about 8 feet apart. I just raise my beam up(with a hole in each end of the web), the hanger straddles the beam and I put a pin thru each end.
 
I am in the design process right now, as soon as Iget the plans drawn up, I will get them to you.. It might be a little while as I still have some honeydos inlaws will be here in a week.That is some websight.Got some good ideas.

stinky - once you get into its archives, we won't see you for a month...they just went through a huge make-over & I'm still figuring it out again....it is to garages what BCF is to LBC's!
 
your, not kidding, I just put up a steel building 24'by 36' roughed in the plumbing, started on the electrics, this site will help me so much.I just can't get things done fast enough, my healey has been stripped down for the last year,and no place to work on it I'm itching so bad to work onit
 
My machine shop has an i beam on each end of the shop. Another I beam extends between them, and has rollers on each end to roll on the other I beams. The hoist is attached on rollers to the center beam. Thus, he can reach almost any spot in the shop with it.
