Small house fire

Carla and I have a wood stove as our only source of heat. Yesterday, while outside splitting wood, we noticed smoke coming out of the front gable. "This isn't right" we thought. Sure enough...THE ATTIC WAS ON FIRE !!

House is 70+ years old with lots of remodeling through the years. Who knew that the chimney had been framed in upstairs with a 6" stovepipe hole INSIDE THE WALL??!! Incredible.

Busting sheetrock and a garden hose through the upstairs window solved the problem. Nearest fire station (volunteer) wouldn't have gotten here in time to help. All is well with no loss and we have it all repaired and have heat again. Just glad we were home and it was during the day.

Merry Christmas everyone and thanks for all of the help you have given us with our MG. We are REALLY thankful for all of you.

Gary and Carla

Wow, Gary! Good to hear it wasn't too bad.

gary, glad your o.k., i know how you feel about 3 years ago my wife set our kitchen ablaze by leaving an unattended pot on the stove i just happened to be home that afternoon, scary for shure.

Dude, that would have been a Christmas to remember.
Glad everything is all right.

Oh, move to the big city :jester:

I'm sure glad it didn't go bad for you!
The thought of a house fire scares the bejessus
outta me.
I have big extinguishers placed throughout.
Never needed one, never want to.

Thanks to all...we were REALLY lucky it happened when we were home and in the daytime. I (barely) lived through an aircraft crash and fire once...fires are SCARY !!

Gary

Nothin' worse. VERY pleased you were there to make it not be a catastrophy.

I hate fire... Yet I love it. The deal is: learn to control it.

"Make a HOLE!!!"

Ya did well, Gar.

"Breathe in, breathe out, go on..."

Small miracles.

YAY!

Glad you are well - though I know when you saw all that dark smoke your first thought was "Hmmm think the house is running a little rich."

seriously, more to be thankful for this Christmas

Glad you're OK.

I heated my house with firewood (and passive solar gain) for over 10 years. During that time I had one chimney fire and it was scary! Even though I kept the chimney clean, a small amount of residue caught fire and sounded like a jet plane in the living room. Shutting the damper put it out, but not before I almost had a stroke.

Anyway, glad you will be able to have a happy Christmas!

#1 - glad you and yours are all ok.

#2 - it was a "small house" fire - did you use thimbles as buckets?

#3 - glad you and yours are all ok.

Thanks everyone...only had minor adrenalin(sp?) rush. We got warm again yesterday afternoon. JP...yeah, I hate when the house runs rich .

Being involved with a local fire department,we've had some people
try to put the fire out first, then call the fire department.By the time
they've called & the engine shows, the house/garage is fully engulfed in
flames.
Best to call 911,then try & put it out, that way the firefighters
are already on the way.If the fire's out, they can check for "hot spots",
so there isn't a rekindle.

greg, thanks, im not bad around fires, i keep my head while my wife was totaly freaked about it, my dad was a statinary fireman for n.y.c santation dept and a volunter fireman in our community, he taught us what to do and what not to do around fires, interesting that around this time of year on dec 17, 1960 was a mid-air plane crash over n.y.c. causing fires and on dec 20. 1960 was the tragic fire on the then being built aircraft carrier the constitution at the brooklyn navy yard that took the lives of 50 civilian workers, my dad responded as a firefighter to both those events, two days ago for my own amusement i put together an outline for another one of my run on diatribes about my dad and how the navy yard fire affected him and myself, most likely it will end up in the trash but for some reason its been on my mind for a couple of weeks, i was 9 years old and remember those events as if i happened this morning but cant find where i left my car keys last night.
