sludg in the radiator

well I checked the coolent this moring and the water seems a bit sludgey
at first I thought it was just crud from the old heater core I finaly hooked up but the sludge seems oily.

the radiator is 3 years old

Hmmm...old coolant can seem kind of oily. Do you actually see oil floating on top of it--iridescent surface, that kind of thing? If you did, I suspect you'd have said that.

If it were me, I'd flush it, put in new coolant, watch it, and hope for the best.
 
I suppose it could be oil leaking into water passage at the head gasket but that would be about the only place. Usually the other way around. Agree with Steve: flush and watch it.
