Slight Mazda rant

so, in our family we have three Mazda's. My '04 6, my mother's '02 protege and my sister's '06? 5. The Mazda 5 goes through a quart of oil every two tanks of gas. My mother's is covered in rust and I just spent two days repairing the rust on mine. both rear wheel wells, two window side trim pieces and the tailgate edge. I love the zoom zoom but I am not impressed with quality control. Oh and my cousin had a 5 which he got rid of after its second engine went. sheesh.

Ok rant over.

Only ones I "approve" of (like that means anything ) are the Miata and RX7.

Otherwise, Hyundai or Honda all the way.

BTW, from what I've seen on BMW's they are prpbabaly the best protected from rust of any car. (that I've seen persoanlly)

Just my two cents -

I owned a Mazda Protege 1990-2000 and another Protege 2000-2011.

Never had a problem with either one, mechanical, electrical, or corrosion. Best cars I ever owned (until I got my 2011 Nissan Altima - knock wood).

Must be something in the water JP uses to wash the cars ...

Tom

I agree that the Miata and the RX-7 are the only Mazda's worth messing with, as for BMW the two I ave had were both rust buckets, although they were rust buckets that ran and drove very well.

I have an '03 Miata that lives outside. Zero rust, zero problems.

My dad had an '03 Honda minivan that the lift-gate hinges rusted completely away. The two vehicles were parked next to each since new.

Go figure.

My '03 Miata I bought new now has 90K miles and has been great. My daughter's '02 Protege 5 has about 113K miles and has been a great car. No rust on either car.

wash? :confuse:

I bought my '00 Miata new.
It has never been garaged and has thrashed regularly with pretty skimpy maintenance.

Right now, with 110,000 miles, it has a slightly noisy wheel bearing. Previously, the clutch master cylinder failed and the EGR clogged (both simple repairs). There's a bit of rust under one door, but not bad.
Overall, the best car I have ever owned and I would buy another in a minute if this one got wrecked or stolen.

On the other hand.......

Linda bought a Mazda Protege in '02. Drove it super gently and always did all the proper maintenance. It blew a trans in '08 with 65,000 miles. Very disappointing (it got traded in on a new Accord, which we really like).
