Hello all, I just pulled out my Slave Cylinder in my 74' Spit for a rebuild kit and realized that the spring was missing from inside the cylinder.Will the clutch work this way or do i need to replace the cylinder? The gentleman i bought it from said it ran 3 years ago before he started his resto but he didnt say it actually drove.Id rather not put it back in if it wont work. Any suggestions? Thanks "Spit Newbie"
 
I don't think you will get any where without the return spring. If the inside cylinder walls are not pitted, you may be able to successfully rebuild the slave with a kit and the addition of the return spring.
 
I gave it a try this morning and "No Bueno". Looks like ill have to get a new cylinder. Does any distributing co. have the inside parts to the slave cylinder or do i need to get a new one? Anyone? Thanks, "Spit Newbie"
 
You can get the kits and/or the complete assemblies for these from all of the majors, TRF, Moss, VB. Also Apple Hydraulics will rebuild them for you with a new SS sleeve inside.

There are a few others out there that offer rebuilding as well.

Get a replacement from one of Paul's mentioned suppliers and have the old one sleeved with SS from Apple or White Post. That one becomes an "archival" part.

Not sure where you are in sunny-Cal, but you might try Nigel at Spitbits (www.spitbits.com). He is very knowledgeable, and usually has good prices. He lists a repro pre-77 slave cylinder for $50.

He may be able to supply the spring you need if you give him a call, but I don't see it listed separately on his site.

I think White Post doesn't do sleeving alone anymore, but require that they sleeve AND rebuild the cylinder.
