Slapping drive line!!

Hello,

I was hoping someone could offer some advice regarding a drive line issue.

My center bearing bushings and u joints seem fine however I question the rear engine mount ( trans mount ) It seems every now and then I can hear the drive shaft slap the tunnel when making a left turn. This is very intermitent and usualy quiet and vibration free at speed. My mechanic looked it over and said he saw nothing out of the ordinary except the trans mount spring seemed soft to him.

Any advice or suggestions would be great. I'm looking for some direction before I take on this task.

Thanks
Patrick

Is your car a coupe or sedan? There exists a tech bulletin for aligning the driveline for coupes, where this was a common occurence. If it is a sedan, the trans mount could be improperly assembled, the center "spool" is wearing out, or some combination. They make much better replacement parts for the spool than the compressed fiber stuff that Jag used.Look at a parts book and be sure that you have all the spacers and bits that are supposed to be attached to the center stud of the mount. These are often missing, or assembled in the wrong order. Don't forget to take a look at the front engine mounts also.

Thanks for the info!

My XJ is a sedan.

Any one have a resource where I can find a breakdown of the trans mount components? My manuals exploded view is not as detailed as I would like. I have two manuals the factory service manual and a Haynes. Niether goes into real details regarding this component.

My parts source (Motorcars LTD)does not have any trans mount parts for a 73 available. Can I use parts from another series? How about a complete mount change?

I'm open to any suggestions!!!

Thanks
P
