I read that article on the plane flight over.....old owner of skype is looking at offering movies/TV on the internet along much the same lines as he's done telephone operations on the internet.

Look at the date of that Basil. June 06. Lawsuit went nowhere.
What if the power goes out?
If the power goes out at my place, even being with Bell until Vonage comes in my area, My phones go out too, being plugged into the electrical outlets. If I have my old simple push button phone plugged into the wall phone jack I am OK.
And speaking of Vonage, it seems that Verizon is sueing Vonage for patent infrigement and there is (or was) a class action suit related to their IPO.

Ok, I'm sure both are great and have advantages and disadvantages, so like I said it boils down to whatever works for you. With Vonage you pay a monthly charge even if you never make a call. Not so with Skype. So far, Skype has been great for me and I still have not spent my $10 in credits /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

By the way, their rate page, which includes US and Canada calls, shows just 2.1 cents/minute to most locations I call (including UK) At the rate I make LD calls to landlines in the US, it would still be far cheaper for me than paying $24.00 before I ever make my first call. At 2.1 cents per minute, I would have to make more than 1100 minutes (about 20 hours) worth of calls in a month to make switching ever close to cost effective. Even my wife can't do that. So for now at least, Skype works for best for me. That could change in the future, but since family and most friends use Skype, most of my calling is free anyway.

I didn't realise that Skype was your only telephone access you have, and no land line service at all. Interesting. So you use your cell phone and Skype?
Here, Vonage service replaces your existing Phone service provider, ie Bell Canada. What we pay monthly to Bell is about 40% higher then what it will be for us when Vonage comes to our area in the new year. With Vonage too, the service can be utalized anywhere we go or have family, using our plan.
That is what saves the money.

eh... I like my ADSL much more than the Cable internet service we have in my area. So, I have a land line because my ISP couldn't bring me a 'dry line' due to some technicality. So, I have my land line with no long distance service on it (~$20/mo), plus my 3Mb/s ADSL (~$30), and my cell for when I'm out and long distance calls.
Actually, I think most people just call me on my cell now days. So, it seems my land line is only good for ADSL life support and receiving telemarketing calls. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif Well, I haven't had any telemarketing calls since I got back from vacation, so I guess my signing up on the "national do not call list" on the internet is working. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
