Silly question Gear Box oil change/top up

Wigan,
You'll find it right behind the speaker cabinet below the dash on top of the tranny housing.Under the carpeting there's a rubber plug, remove and replace the dipstick carefully as they tend to want to jump back on their own. Not completely sure about the 74 with respect to speaker location, but on the top of the hump is where it is.

And put a smidge of oil on the dip stick O rings for easier removal next time. Like you put on the oil filter gasket.

Paul, Are you serious? I assumed MOSS #462-570 for MGB 1968-1980 would be the unit for a 1974. I certainly agree that the late model MGB is lacking when compared to the "early years",(that oughta get some response) but I figgered they must at least have a dipstick, maybe that's why Wigan couldn't find it?
 
Somewhere in the late 70's they went to a side-fill gearbox. On that trans, you check the oil level by removing the fill plug on the right side of the transmission. My 74 picked one up sometime before I got it.

Although it requires raising the car, I find it easier than the old knucle buster dipstick.
 
I agree, the "old" way is another one of those What were they thinking moments. Maybe by then they realized that these beloved vehicles of ours would be on the jacks frequently enough where it wouldn't be an inconvenience in the slightest to check the level in that way. Thanks for the insight.

I have a spare 72, a 76 and a 79 gear box on the shelf, so to speak, and only the 72 has a dip stick, the others are side fills. Biggest problem there is, none of them are ODs!

Well, the easiest way to find out is to look on top of the hump behind the radio panel and see if there is a rubber plug. It'll be on the right facing forward. If there is, pull the plug out and stick your finger down there and feel for a metal loop, if it's there, that's the top of the stick, pull it out and check the oil. If it's not there, then you have a side fill. You might have to fashion a short hook from stiff wire to pop it loose. I think the hole was still in the later cars but the tranny was changed. I might be wrong on that. I use the recommended 20/50 in mine.
