Sideshift Tranny & OD rebuild

Knoledgable ones,

I have not pulled a transmission in 15 years, now I get to re-live a bit of my youth.

I am looking for a recommendation for someone in the SF Bay area who knows AH trannys and ODs very well to help out with my pending repairs/rebuild. I have probably slipped third gear fork or have a broken syncro. OD mechanics also don't work to well.

I have not pulled the thing out yet but understand the procedure as follows.

Day 1. Have a Gunniess and just look at it and put it off another day.
Day 2. Jack way up and place on jackstands.
Support tranny.
Remove tunnel, bulkhead.
Drain. Disconnect clutch linkage, OD, speedo.
Remove starter.
Remove rear most mount, tranny mount.
Disconnect from engine
Ease back (may requre slightly elevating rear of engine)

I also understand that I do not have to drain the hydralics.

So I plan to pull it out and if I can find a reputable rebuilder in the SF bay area I'll let them rebuild/fix it.

At this time I also want to add an aftermarket rearseal (any recommended sources?).

Writing this email allows me to procrastinate a bit longer.

Comments suggestions? What am I getting into.

Tracy,

1. I prefer Bass myself.
2. Don't jack too high. It comes out the top. You also don't need to support the tranny yet.

When draining, don't forget to drain the OD, since it's the same oil as the trans. You drain by removing the ~2" diameter brass plug on the bottom. Be sure to catch the OD pump inlet screen.

I trust you mean disconnect the OD wiring.

Remove the fore and aft trans mount at the rear of the trans and unbolt the two rear mounts from the frame.

There are two special bolts that attach the bell housing to the engine back plate. These will have plain heads and a machined shaft, rather than the usual forged one. Make a note of where thes go, so you put them back in the right holes. They are to accurately align the engine and trans.

Tie the clutch slave cylinder out of the way and don't let it hang from the hose. You may want to tie the rod into the cylinder so it doesn't come out, especially if you accidently lean on the clutch pedal.

You can put a jack under the back of the engine here to lift the back slightly. It's easier here if you promise a Guinness or two to someone to help lift the beast out (lift first, Guinness after).

You're correct about the hydraulics.

I got my seal from Denis Welch (also sold by British Car Specialists), but had it put in professionally when rebuilding the engine. You take the flywheel off and use the crankshaft flange bolt holes as a guide to drill four holes for the seal. Issues here are getting it centered and cleaning up the chips after drilling.

I have to agree with Alan. British Car Specialists is where I got mine done. I recall it being about $800 plus parts.

I was sure this came out the bottom. See what I get by asking. I may just get motivated enough to go for this over the weekend.
