sideshift rebuild

I'm rebuilding the gearbox on my BT7. I am replacing all bearings, ball and roller. Putting in Denis Welch syncros. Checking all detents and springs and checking for wear on all shafts. Any other advice ? What causes it to jump out of gear and what do I look for there ? Thanks for the help !

Worn synchromesh hubs are the reason for popping out of gear. Oftentimes, just replacing all the springs and balls, including those in the selector rods, will cure that symptom.

If you're looking for pictures, I've built a couple of sideshift xmsns already this year:

And a series of albums on one I did for myself (pick them from the list of sub-albums on this page) https://www.rfdm.com/gallery/albums.php?set_albumListPage=14

Thank you!

If you're already familiar with the polymer coatings (I use the Techline brand from their professional__solvent based__line) then you know that it's hard to quantify the benefits.

I will say though, it does shift smoothly and is relatively quiet; the exception being the straight-cut 1st gear, but mine is in very good shape, so it's no noisier than some, and much quieter than most.

Great pictures. My side shift ate 3 of the gears. It looked like the teeth were not aligned and it wore off the edges of the laygear, first and reverse. I had not developed the guts to take it apart, but after seeing your pictures, maybe it is doable.

but then, the Toyota I installed is sooo nice!

Randy, I use Techline also. Did you coat just teeth, or sides and syncro tapers also ? Bob
I did the whole thing with TLML. I was a little concerned about the tapered cones (inner and outer), but they seem to be doing their job just fine.

I fully expect the benefits to yield a longer service life, from reduced friction and cooler running, than any outward (or even noticeable) performance gain...

... unlike an engine

My money says the layshaft needle rollers are "gone" at the little-end of the laygear.

If you don't have the guts, I do

Randy Thanks ! Bet the wife liked the parts on the kitchen counter ?
The back story: she wants me to ruin the counter; she can't believe we bought a house like ours that didn't already have granite counter tops.

Trust me when I tell you that I'm very careful around them, I don't want to spend the money for granite
