side-flasher unit

I have a broken side/flasher glass at the front. (I ranted about teenagers in a separate post)

The rubber moulding that this glass fits into seems to only just hold onto the metal ring that holds the glass, making it an easy nudge. Is there some way it can be wrongly installed, making it easier to dislodge? I though I had the metal ring correctly seated in the rubber lip all the way round.

If I were to replace the rubber part as well as the glass, would I get a better (stronger) fit from a new one, or are the "new" ones of poor quality like so much else? I guess I might as well, since the bulb is broken as well, and the fitting is somewhat corroded inside.

As it's probably only a few cents for a new seal you might as well get it at the same time. Anyway, shouldn't the culprit be paying for it? Tell him it caused damage to the wiring loom, which in turn damaged the engine etc...

The new rubber will cost in the neighborhood of 4-5 bucks (from the usual guys) and will make a big difference! As the rubber deteriorates with age the chrome "retaining" ring does have a tendency to pop off with only slight nudges. I have had similar problems with old pieces, but have found a couple of drops of weather-strip cement (I use the 3M yellow stuff) squeezed into the groove before placing the ring in will give a good temporary securing bond and comes apart fairly easily too if you need to replace a bulb! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

PS any extra "glue" that squeezes out, wipes off very easily if you use the 3M stuff!
