Side Exhaust

Has anybody tried this Stebro system on their BJ8? These show up on eBay every so often, such as here and I was curious how it sounds? Too loud? Drone? If anybody had a picture, sound or video clip that would be great, thanks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't have that make but I do have side exhaust and would not have it any other way. I like the sound.

How do they compare to the Denis Welch version? At £180 that's about $320 + shipping, though its not stainless....

I've heard some people do not think that the stainless "sounds" right....

Keep in mind James, that the "side exhaust" came from RHD "Rallye Cars". The majority of "...sounds wrong..." comments I have heard come from folks with LHD cars. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

i took off the side exhaust on my 100-6 because it was too loud in my ear...lhd w exhaust exiting by the drivers door...couldn't hear my tunes...very loud on the road...instead i got the headers from dennis whelch and put on a monza muffler...not to stock, but very very quiet...the side exhaust is cool but LOUD

Hi JW, regarding the sound from the stainless steel exhaust systems it may depend on the source.I have a set made in Canada, all the mufflers are round.Consquently, after a period of time the cases stretch from being repeatedly heated and the baffels in side begin to rattle.They also have a high pitch ring if Wolleyed.---Keoke

The good thing is that the Stainless lasts forever. We've had the same side exhaust system since 1979 in our 61'3000 . Very loud, gets old on long trips. Earplugs helpful. One side note. In my early days at speeds around 35 mph, it was fun to scare a left side vehicle passing you by shifting to 4th, bury the throttle, lift and downshift to second. Very long flame and loud bang develops out into slipstream of the passing offending Harley rider......

Well there's already another set side exhaust on eBay they put them up every couple of weeks. I emailed one guy to see if he might send me an audio or video clip of the exhaust system running. But I think the comments here are correct, it would be loud, probably louder than I would want. I have a new Bell SS system on, only a few hundred miles on it, and it's just too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif quiet. No roar, rumble, growl at all /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif Then again, maybe it will mature a bit with time. And I'm not sure I want the exhaust dumping out under the door. I had a vet with that, always burned my leg when I forgot it was there getting out /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif Anyway, thanks all for the input. Now if it would just drop below 95 or so I would go cruising again...

I have Dennis welch headers and side exhaust fitted to my car. There is more resonance and a lower rumbling note. They are louder, but maybe only because they are nearer to your ear! Not sure they are louder to spectators. One downside I have found is that you lose the distinctive Healey rasping sound that comes in as you acclerate through about 2800 revs. I think thats due to freer air flow resulting from the headers. Not sure what a side exhaust with the normal exhaust manifold sounds like.

IMHO the SS systems sound tinnier, the mild steel are nicer.
