I want a side exhaust for my 1956 BN2 and I realize the exhaust will be loud but I like the exhaust note on my car. I have a Moss Motors stainless exhaust and want to find a side exhaust pipe here in states but have had no luck. It does not have to be stainless but would be nice. May have to make one. Any ideas where to look. I put the exhaust pipe together with muffler paste is it hard to break the connection? Thanks Marty

On my BN4, I had a local muffler shop bend a couple of pieces of exhaust tubing at 60-deg angles and welded a support to attach to the hanger behind the muffler. IIRC, you only need to have someone bend one piece of tubing.

BTW, earplugs are a good idea. When my DW is along, we use headsets.

I made a temp side exhaust from a couple of right-angle tailpipe parts from my local Pep Boys. Too loud by far on my 6 cyl, but the 4s are not as loud. Suggest you mock it up cheaply before you invest in the muffler shop doing it right.

What Steve says: I had a side exhaust on my 100 for a while but it really was too loud.

Hey Marty,
I have had a side exhaust system on my 100M for about 5 years and really like the exhaust tone and it is not too loud. My Healey has period exhaust headers made for when the car was raced in the 50's so it is dual pipes coming down versus single like the stock exhaust manifold so I have a dual intake muffler with dual outlets with a dual side exhaust outlet. Muffler from a 100-6 and side exhaust piece are from AH Spares in UK. Had to actually cut the side exhaust down in length and expand the inlet to fit onto the muffler and fit correctly. Attached a picture where you can see how it looks. Not sure if a single exhaust side mount would be louder for some reason or a different tone but mine sounds similar to a 100-6 exhaust which is what I wanted !
Regards
Mike

What's all this talk about side exhaust being too loud? At most of our ages we can't hear anything anyway. :jester:

What?? How true, lol. I think I am going to give it a try. I always drive with windscreen down so wind noise will cover lots of it too. Thanks

I have a side exhaust on my 64 . It was a custom made from Stebroe . I had them make the silencer as long as possible and still allow the pipes to exit neatly just in front of the rear wheel and as for the sound . I love it not to loud but has that distinct Healey gurgle at idle and the pop pop pop on downshifts makes me smile everytime .
i do have video of it running but Im way to computer stupid to figure out how to upload that .

They will have everything you need. I used the oval pipes for a straight exhaust on my race car. The custom made a 2 into 1 Y pipe to come off my header. You could stick a muffler in between in between for a street car

I actually used their street muffler and had a muffler system made up in case I thought of going on the street. Had it on once still is 80 db

I have Spintechs on my Nasty Boy. The nice part is the "Cruiser" series is only 2 1/4" tall and tuck up under the chassis pretty well.

I just finished piecing together a side exhaust pipe from auto parts store and it looks decent. Since I always drive with my BN2 windscreen down and deaf in one ear and can't hear out of the other the sound is no problem, lol. I have the Moss motors stainless steel muffler and the sound is not as sweet as I had hoped. Maybe I will have to raise windscreen to shut out wind noise so I can hear it better. Pitch is much deeper than I thought it would be. The 6 cylinders cars have a much sweeter sound I think but this works. Leaving the garage is fun with sound coming off wall. Engine has M pistons, valve springs, cam etc not sure if that effects sound or not? Thanks for all the help, Marty
