I'm really interested in HOW they are painted. Anyone have a process for lining everything up, masking, and painting from bonnet to boot?

carefully and realy wrap around the edges of the panel. the mistakes in the gaps bug you for years.

I set my temporary stripe up with fan-fold paper and painters tape.

a tip is to paint the base color or clear over your tape
before you paint the color if the stripes this will seal the tape and give you a nice clean line when you remove the tape

Yeah, it's not street legal, but only pic I have and car has been gone since 1973. Colors are appliance white with Hugger orange and yellow stripes w/ black pin stripe separators.
