1. Go to a local flea market and buy two long belts. ($5 each)

2. Go to Michael's and buy a set of snaps ($9)

3. Cut the belts so that the buckle will lie 1/2 - 2/3 down whatever you are carrying

4. Install the first set of snaps - making sure the proportions are right - do the others in the same spot so it will look right.

5. Finding a suitcase out of the garbage that is leather and old enough to look right. (priceless)

6. Install and look authentic

Nice. That is just the way I am going to replace the ratty top tiedown straps in the boot.

Nice job! Very neat. Good tip on where to get snaps cheap too.
We buggered a couple of snaps doing my tonneau and wound
up short of enough to do the flaps that hold the tonneau down to the rear when the thing is unzipped. Michael's here I come.

nice work JP ! I just finally sourced a similiar suit case from local garbage dump this winter, I will have to copy your strap idea, much nicer than the "spider bungee" that I have now (it does work great for a 24 of Moosehead though)

you used to be able to buy them in sets. they have them individually on ebay - one day

Snaps look nice, but I might feel more comfortable with a turnbuckle of some sort.

great idea (hadn't thought of it) I did think of getting some elastic sewn in. I suppose you might be able to adapt a ratchet from a strap. I wanted to keep it retro looking and figured I could fine tune with a leather hole punch

Man, John-Peter's tip about Michael's as a source for snaps was
brilliant. :thankyousign:

Not only did they have snaps AND the install tool cheap
but they also had snaps in black. I bought two packs of snaps
(chrome & black) and the tool for install for slightly over $7.
I'm going to use the black snaps for the snaps that are in the center on those flaps that attach to the rear inside when the tonneau is unzipped for use. That way the tonneau is just
all black in the middle without the chrome buttons detracting from the clean look when it's all zipped up.
