O.K. I understand the fuel pump is supposed to be in trunk, but I'm sure it shouldn't be laying around. It should be mounted...where? (No little black box anywhere that I can find)
oops, I guess I should be more precise. This question is for a 1980 MGB that we just purchased. We are trying to sort out what goes where b/c the DPO didn't really bother to put things where they belonged (or for that matter even use original parts)
We have a manual on order but it hasn't arrived yet and we are trying to work in the blind so to speak.
We have begun removing some of the more obvious things like a bunch of wires ocming through the hole in the trunk and attached to a fuel pump lying there. hmmm just doesn't look like it should go like that.
We have some great pics of the dash and motor, but the trunk set up is hard to find.
No picture...but...On page 29 of the Moss MGB catalog, you'll see an artist's rendering of the SU fuel pump. (#40) There is also a photograph of an SU pump on the same page....item #377-255 (although it's a solid state rather than a ponts variety).
The area that #44 points to would be insided the boot (trunk)...the body (and connections to the incoming and out-going fule lines) would be exposed to the outside of the car. The little black box was merely a protective cover.
I might have one lying around...or I'm sure that someone on this BBS does that could share with you (it's a good thing to have to protect the pump from things bouncing around).
Terri
Hey, guess what I have?
A brand new fuel pump. I can put this in the box and send it with the wiring if you would like. I'll send you a PM if your interested.
Dave
Terriphil - Your problem stems from the fact that someone installed an after market pump. Let me rephrase that, they hooked up an after market pump and dropped it in the trunk to rattle around unsecured. The stock, SU fuel pump mounts through the grommet in the front bulkhead of the trunk where the PO has routed the fuel lines to the after market pump.
Cheers,
That looks like a vane pump, I'd guess it puts out MUCH more than 5 PSI and has a "choke" (pressure regulator) on the supply line somewhere forward of it. Deep-six that whole rig and put a proper pump setup on it... That present "arrangement" is dangerous, IMO.
The canister part (bottom) of an SU pump should stick through that grommet in your trunk floor. The part with the fuel line connections would be under the car. Then a little black box covers the bottom of the pump to protect it from whatever you might put in the boot...
