Shouldn't have done that...

I hate carbs. Never did get the idea about tuning them. They are all too much like "sacrifice a goat at the dark of the moon to ensure your idle circuit is aligned" rather than "test that the output from A is between 5 and 5.5"...
Actually, there's a lot of similarity. Just imagine how hard it would be to check that the voltage output at 125.7v input was correct without a voltmeter ! But you are trying to check your carb's output under particular circumstances without a carb mixture meter.

One solution to that is to buy a good mixture meter ... aka wide-band universal exhaust gas oxygen sensor or UEGO. Eg,

Alan,

It could be lean and the timing could be retarded and that can produce horrible results. Perhaps the distributor wasn't tightened down and it walked back a bit? Easy to check.....

I think that you should before driving it to Woody. No sense doing any damage on the way.

You mean it was ok for the first 1000 miles but won't be for the next 250

Seriously, I'll take a look at the timing tomorrow. A friend has a WB setup as a tailpipe sensor, so I might mosey over there one night next week to let it have a sniff and see what's what. The one in the 6 is a permanent install otherwise I'd have pulled it out to check.

The thing about it is that the PO let a shop do all his work afaict. That's why I didn't bother to check any of this stuff in the first place. Shame on me...

Setting up a Holley is not too bad. There has got to be a TON of info on the net. Check the float level setting first. (After checking for the obvious things like vacuum leaks, clogged filters crap frel pump etc.If none of that solves it, then jet "tuning" kits are available from most of the american car hi po places (Jegs, summit)Or, you could chuck the Holley, and get an AFB from edelbrock. They work pretty well on TR8s.

I mean that you wouldn't be the first victim of a loose hold down bolt that slowly took affect over 1,000 miles. :wall:

A/F at 19 is danger zone, AFAIC. Do NOT hole a piston from a lean condition. Now that you know it to be lean, the chances it'll eat itself have increased. Machines as soulless creatures is a highly over-rated philosophy. IMO they're malignant.

Holley ID's their carbs with plenty of numbers, so Woody will likely be able to give you good info as to what jetting and/or changes to make, first go.

Well it's not timing - unless the marks are wrong too.
I swear these vehicles are malignant. Just when you think everything is ok, something else goes wrong.

I'm waiting for the 6 to start acting up too now - sorta like a socialist solidarity thing (and if you studied the reason why BL went belly up, you'll know just what I mean).

BFH for the lot of them I tell you...

To be that lean, I'd expect a gaping hole in the intake manifold!

It's off to the doctor on Thursday, so I'll just have to drive the other one until then. Oh woe is me

OK, so, what'd ya do?

Bigger carb + Tuned better than before = Lots more fun.

It will actually accelerate now. It might even have more power than my TR6...

What is the definition of "tuned better than before"?

You're killing me with the suspense here, Alan.....

Well, now! Good to hear!

Get out and enjoy!

In this case the definition could easily be "tuned by someone with the first clue what they were doing". The old carb wasn't well. That affected the performance.

Seriously Woody spent 4 hours this afternoon rejetting a new bigger carb for it. It runs so much better that it's hard to believe that it's the same engine.

Woody's the MAN!

As I've said before, no one better than Woody on a TR8.

Did he show you his red coupe that absolutely screams power?

Or better yet, did he have it running while you were there?

It's up on stands with the engine half in and half out. There's another big engine on a stand for a customer behind it.

Pretty, Shiny, Me Want.

It's time to sign off. This is getting to be dangerous territory for me to be treading in.

Tomorrow, dudes..............
