The cracks typically appear when the spokes have broken away from the rim, allowing the bakelite / plastic / whatever to flex. My original wheel on my MGA is doing that very thing, flexing and cracking around the spokes. A new MGA wheel will be surprisingly stiff from what I've been told.
The one in my 58 is like new....But I hardly ever touch that car anymore so I can't recall how stiff it is. I know the wood wheel in the 61 is flimsy, ugly, and the unfunctional horn button keeps falling out.
Do they make epoxies that you can tint as a "DIY" kit. My TD wheel needs work and never thought about it being done by me. If I can, I'd love to do it myself.
Dint they come as a marbled look? That's why I asked about coloring epoxy. I'd think you could blend in and then sand & polish and make it look original.
Another interesting tidbit that may help when it comes time for the epoxy DIY... Make a silicone mould (you can buy kits for doing this at a hobby/craft store) of a good section of the steering wheel, and then use it to hold the epoxy in place, and it should nearly be close to the same shape. Just a thought.
