Should I remove this section of my exhaust system ???

What are you trying to accomplish. Looks like a stock Spridget Muffler. Personally I like the sound of this one. The first one I got for free as a takeoff from local Harley Dealer. Evidently they have had a policy recently about not selling takeoffs from Service Department any more. New one that is going on Bugsy IV I got for $15 at local Motorcycle Swap Meet. The one with tapered Bullet Shaped Tip 19" long is the one you want, preferable with baffles intact that you can modify if needed. A couple of pipe adapters got me to 1 3/4" which IIRC is the size of this muffler. A Strap hanger, a little bit of McGuyvering and Bob's Your Uncle. I needed to Spot Weld the pipe adapters as they kept coming apart. If you don't have a welder, a box of donuts on a slow morning will probably get tack welds done for free. 4 pulses from an A Series Engine into a Muffler normally getting a single pulse every 180 degrees of revolution really sounds nice and mellow and not rice rocket sounding.

My questions would be ....... what is it? ...... what's its purpose? I wouldn't want anything in the exhaust system that could cause back pressure/exhaust flow issues.

I would like to know what it is also its before the muffler in the pipe.

Mark it almost looks like a cherry bomb or a knockoff - I wonder if they started with it and a straight pipe and later added another muffler?

Looks like a resonator. These were more common on 80s era domestic exhausts than on a Spridget, and they were used after the muffler.
