Should I grab these knockoff rims?

I took my Pontiac for an oil change this morning, to the place where I bought the GT. When I got the GT and he took off the yellow minilites that were on it, he put the tires on the four Rostyles that were on the car origionally when it was taken in. He also told me about a set of wires that the owner brought in as well. When I was there today, I happened to ask him if they were still sitting around. He mumbled a few curse words in Polish, then smiled and took me over to them and said, "If they go missing.. No loss to me." Seems the guy who owned the GT still has his 1973 Citroen sitting over there taking up space. He would like to see the car "Dissapear" too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Anyway. I was hoping they were bolt on's but they are knockoffs, and might be origional. They have been painted red, but the paint is flaking off. He said he put them on the machine a couple years ago and they are nicely balanced. The wires are nice and tight, no rust on them at all, which is odd I thought. They have brass coloured spin thingys with them, but one is missing.
Would these be worthwhile picking up for free? I have no use for them but might they be worth somthing?

Thanks

Paul

If the splines are good, they are worth a hundred bucks or so. If the splines are bad, they are worthless.

Thanks Steve.

I take it the splines are the "spokes" ?

If the splines are good definatly grab em...I've got a stack of old wheels I've collected over the years, never know when they might come in handy.

Hey Ron.

Need a '73 Citroen? Pretty nice shape, pretty much abandend. Lou wants it gone, and it is ten minutes from your house. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I am sure you have room somewhere for it.

No, the splines inside the hub. See the bottom of this page for the basics: https://www.daytonwirewheels.com/html/balancespline2.htm

Here's a photo of a worn Hub- the wear is easier to see with them, but similar wear patterns on the inside of the wheel are equally trouble.

If they're not worn they'd be useful and maybe worth something to someone, sometime.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

If they're worn they're potentially dangerous (think emergency stop behind a Fuel tanker).... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif

hummm whats a 73 Citroen look like?....Whats the name of his shop? I know of most around here.

ewwww...thats not the prettiest car around,is it? Any word on the model Paul? My wifes french, maybe she'll find room for it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Splines and hubs were shot on Binabox, we had to replace both. We just took 5 wire knockoff wheels and tires out to my sister-in-law's woods to fill up a big hole for them. Not worth a nickel if the splines don't check out as everyone said.

They are the ones that have the vegitable oil in them for the suspension, or something like that.

I will PM you the shop name.

Citroen SM, Maserati V-6, Citroen hydro-pneumatics, wonderful cars if they run right, but if maintained property they are more reliable than they are given credit for. Really a true supercar.....

The Citroen is one of the smoothest rides you will ever encounter. Smoother than a Rolls! I know this as a fact as I've rode in both of them. The car had a very unique suspension for it's day. Air over hydraulic. No springs. It automaticly leveled itself when someone got in the car.The ride is like floating on a cloud. Very quiet and comfortable inside. Yet it had pretty responsive steering. It would push a lot in the corners, but it was designed for comfort not racing. As I remember, it was very fast. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif PJ

Paul - Are you saying there's a decent Citroen SM just waiting for somebody to go pick up? WOW!! One of you guys up near it should go grab that! Weren't many brought over here, I recall.

Yup. It was there when I bought the GT from the same missing owner, and it is still there. I am sure something could be worked out between the garage owner and the useless owner of the car.

I got your PM paul, thanks.....and after reading the comments here I might be a little more interested than I initially thought, I know absolutly nothing about citroens...but it does sound kinda neat...My concern is attaining the ownership, sure the shop owner can 'sell' me the car...but I'd need the real owner to agree to it, and sign over the ownership...How did this go with your GT?

Exactly like that. I worked out a price with the car owner via emails and phone, paid the shop owner the money, and got the signed over ownership from the car owner.
I am sure the shop owner will go out of his way to aid you if you are interested.
