TR4/4A Shortening the Steel Wrapped Heater Control Cables

Dare I shorten these, or will cutting cause them to flip out of control? My heater line is just crammed in so tight, I'd like to use a bolt cutter to take off 1/2 inch. Dare I?
 
Pull the cable out first, then cut off the outer shield. I have done that on a few.

Thanks, that was easy. I wondered all along why the factory would create that bird's next back there, but maybe they didn't. The short length cleans it up, and the longer length may have been an after-market install. I haven't checked what the new cables look like, but I hope they're decent reproductions.
