Shortened shifter?

In an attempt to install a new shifter boot, I discovered that my shifter had been shortened and the shift knob glued to it... I would like the knob to be removable. In a case like this, would it be best to thread the end of the shaft, weld on another threaded section, or something else? Suggestions? Thanks!

Speedwell made a shifter extension back in the day. If you can not find another shifter. I would thread the end of the old shifter. Then get a coupling/all- thread nut and a bolt and make an extension to the length you like. If you find a Stainless nut and bolt no chroming required. I am having my shifter chromed now and it will cost $35.

Must have been popular back in the day. I have one that was shortened the same way.
You could drill a hole into the end and tap it and install a stud and knob (still would be short).
 
If you don't mind losing the chrome its easy to weld a bolt to the shortened shifter. I have shortened two of them and that is how I did it. Weld ground down and you can't tell anything was ever done to them.

How does it shift with the shortened shifter? I have been thinking about shortening mine.
 
A ribcase will be different from a spit box. Personally, I do not like the shortened shifter on a ribcase.
 
Mine is shortened just a bit, maybe 3/4 inch. Clearance is an issue with key fobs/chains attached to the ignition key. I still could cut the darn
ignition off with aggressive shifting. Now I have a snap thing on the fob so I can just have the key itself and nothing more in the switch.
I like the knob in the palm of my hand with the hand over the knob instead of around the knob. Small knob like the stock ones really feels right in your palm. Good vibrations. Especially with the sc/cr box and an alloy knob.
 
If you do shorten one don't go to far. The one on my bug-eye I made a bit short and it take's practice to avoid going to 1'st when trying to hit 3'rd. If I drive it often it's not a problem but if I haven't been in it in a while it is. It's a rib-case on a 1275.
