TR4/4A Shock Absorbers TR4A IRS

OK here goes a topic that will have a lot of personal opinions and I want to know them all.

Fast road car with GoodParts TR6 springs (on a 4A) lowered about an inch. I'd like opinions on front and rear shock absorber recomendations. Rear will remain lever style and not converted to tube shocks.

What say you?

With Richard's springs and stock lever shocks, I found that I was bottoming out a lot. Enough that it brought comment about starting field fires because of all the sparks.
I switched to tubular shocks, a much stiffer ride, but caused me to waste most of a Watkins Glen weekend getting my frame welded....probably because Mikos got lost and took us on some unforgettable roads. You'd think it wouldn't cause a problem at 20 mph....
You will have to drive my car to see the differences the mods have made.

I'd be very interested in these questions too. I am running 100% stock suspension in my '66 TR4A IRS but, plan to upgrade it (someday) - at least the rear.

I have stats on most spring options from Moss, Moss Europe, VB, TRF. The Good Parts spring rates are listed as follows
Front: 390lbs/inch
Rear: 470lbs/inch (with an option for a whopping 600lbs/inch)

FYI, the TR4A stock spring rate is as follows:
Front: 312lbs/inch
Rear: 280lbs/inch

Jerry, which rear spring do you have? Also, do you have the Good Parts springs installed yet? If so, how's the ride height?

Thanks

Bob

Bob,
I currently have some TRF rear springs that I installed in the 80's. I think they are stock TR6 rated. So no I have not installed the GoodParts springs yet. I have a friend who has them on his TR 250 and says he's lower by 1.5 inches with no spacers added. Ted at TS told me that rear ride height of a Tr4A should be 26 5/8 to the lip of the rear fender and that's exactly where mine sits on the left side. Right side is about a 1/2 higher for some reason.. That's of course with 165-15 tires or an equivilant diameter tire. I have 205-60 15" Potenzas currently. I'm hoping for 1" lower.

A good friend who knows his stuff is telling me that I don't need to do anything with my shocks for the type of driving I do. So I may start with stock stuff and decide from there.
