Shipping a trans

Country flag
Offline
Someone on the East Coast has a trans for sale which could be rebuilt. How can I get it crated and shipped to the West Coast and any idea how much shipping would cost? How much does a trans weigh? I'm guessing about 100 lbs? I'd rather find one in California to pick up but haven't seen any for a BJ8.

Hi TH, there are companies that perform that type of sevice have a look in the yellow pages or seach on line .No idea of their charges though.---Fwiw-Keoke

OH TH, you can save some money if you use a business address for the delivery.

Several years ago I had a TR4 trans w/OD shipped to me from the midwest. It came bolted/strapped to a wood platform and totally uncovered. It was shipped to my business via common carrier (big truck, too big for easy residential delivery). Shipping cost about $150. and two guys easily hauled it off the platform and slid it into the back of my Honda CRV.

A few years ago, I bought a gearbox from a fellow on the west coast. He went to a local transmission shop and the shop had several hard plastic cases from replacement transmissions that were shipped to the shop. They sold him one of the plastic cases for a couple of bucks. As I recall, FedEx delivered it to my home address for about $60. It weighed about 65 lb.

Here is another option: https://www.cratersandfreighters.com

The local LBC used parts place here charges about $150 to secure and crate large parts. I would think you'd want it at least secured to a platform, the trucking company may want it crated. Where are you getting it from, maybe a forum member could help arrange things in that location, they might also give you a good visual inspection.

Just so you know, there are two (that I know of) used parts suppliers for LBCs here in upstate New York.

John Kuzman: that craters and friegthers website is good to know about, thanks.

For large items I would suggest using "GPX" (Greyhound package express). You box it up, deliver to local bus station. You will have to pick it up from the bus station, or arrange for local delivery. You can't beat the cost. Visit their website at " Greyhound Package Express "
Hope this helps. I've used them before and the item was large (A hardtop for a TR). The packaging cost more than the shipping cost.
Good Luck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Long ago I shipped a Bugeye bonnett Grayhound, worked fine.
