Shifting in/out of overdrive

First of all, I have to say I love my 4-speed with electronic overdrive, as it really makes it easy to cruise at highway speeds and stay around 3k rpms.

Now, for the fun stuff! When I engage the o/d it takes about a second to engage (which is what most mondern cars do as well) HOWEVER, when I turn it off, it does not always disengage while still driving in 4th, and sometimes does not disengage until I have stopped and am driving in 1st again at which point I get a huge surge of torque and hp as the tach screams forward.


Any ideas to what is going on?
 
Could be the solinoid/valve isn't disengaging until the oil pressure drops down when you stop. Next time you change the transmission oil order a new set of gasket/screens, o-rings for the valve, and a new "ball" for the valve assembly and change those parts out when the oil is out of the transmission. The whole process doesn't take very long, and it's pretty simple.
 
After switching off the O/D, but still in 4th gear, step down on the accelerator a little. On mine it remains in O/D after it is switched off as long as a I maintain the same rpm's, but will kick off once I give it a little gas.
 
Excellent idea, Steve. Low gearbox oil can make the OD shift slowly. I had an undetected leak in a J-type once, I was ready to rebuild it until I checked the oil, which was low.

Topping up the oil made it work like new.
