Any way to get rid of the seemingly excessive noise in the shifter? I don't remember it being so loud on my 72 years ago but on this 76 it is really loud - rattles and shakes like crazy. Covers the sound of that really great sounding engine.
 
Could be the nylon bushing (or lack thereof) at the "ball" on the end of the shifter. If they wear or break, it'll allow ALL the tranny noise to be transmitted thru the shifter.
 
...or if its fallen off sometime in the past....

Very easy! Just remove the shift gater by removing the screws in the hold down plate. In the hole in the tunnel you'll see three small bolts that hold the shift lever retaining plate in place. Remove these bolts,[MAKING SURE]!!,not to drop the bolts and spring washers. Pull out the shift lever. The plastic bushing goes on the ball end of the lever. Replacing the washer springs with the shoulder bolts is very important as it maintains the proper tension on the ball socket. Put a little grease on the upper ball before putting back in place. If your spring washers are missing and/or the shoulder bolts, get new ones. Moss used to have them. If you need them, ask tony at https://www.theautoist.com PJ
 
That's the whole "ball-o-wax." First go at it may take you an hour... not even a "one beer" job.
 
Would this also apply to a Midget transmission?
