Where do you guys find the right size piece to put over the shifter to act as an anti rattle spring on the shifter for a tr3? Is the rubber/ neoprene piece suppose to stick up past the retaining cup or just put pressure?
Steve

Well I thought about long enough and came up with the idea of taking a rubber spark plug wirer end and cutting it back enough to get both ends over the shifter. The cap/boot is perhaps 5/8 and made of neoprene or something. I do wish I had an old school one. This is new and kinda cheesy, so I am not sure how long it will last. Anyways IT worked well; no rattle, and all I had to do was take of the knob and the shifting boot. I actually used a dull screw driver and worked down into the cup and spring with the collar side down.

I've tried putting a 7/8 piece of rubber (5/8 od) on the shift lever and pushed it all the way down to the round part. it didn't stop the rattle but maybe I'm doing it wrong?
You wouldn't happen to have a pic of what you did so I can get a visual. The rattling is very annoying. Do you have the stock spring and plunger in place as well as the neoprene mod? thx Karl

Hi Karl no camera yet, but what I did was simple. My car is stock with the little stock spring and ball and that helps some. To fix the related problem I took a black distributor boot that has a 5/8 end and 3/8 other end then I cut of the 3/8 to make them both 5/8. I next pulled the shifter knob and shifter boot off then slid that piece down the shifter past the cup next to the large retaining spring. I think most the noise comes from Moss part number 848-170 hitting 848-220. Anyways mine is nose free.

This problem has been around forever. This is a quote from a Standard Triumph
service bulletin dated March 1961:
"SUBJECT: GENERAL SERVICE HINTS - TR-3
Gearshift Lever Chatter
The simple corrective measure has been dealt with in a separate Bulletin which seems to have been overlooked by many service shops. Therefore, to briefly recapitulate, remove the gearshift lever knob and boot, remove the top cover bolt and cover together with the inner cover and spring. Slide down over the the gearshift lever a fairly heavy piece of rubber or neophrene (sic) tube 7/8" long and 5/8" inside diameter. Press it down until it comes in contact with the fulcrum ball. Reassemble and that is all that is necessary. The rubber or neophrene tube will act as a vibration damper in this position............" I did this to my 3 about 35K miles ago & haven't had a rattle since.
