The B is back together and running great. For a mere $80!
Apparently that thingy worked loose from the downpipe that goes into the manifold. Got the pipe bent out to fix properly, reattached everything (used the brass nuts and double bolted it as suggested). Radiator is shiny, pretty black now ($40 charge to check it, clean it and paint it...reasonable, right?)
Sounds fine, (dang, so wanted that Peco) and no heat coming up the driver's floorboard burning my feet any more!
