I finally got my engine cranked! Turned over after 3 rotations and ran like a champ. I ran her for 20 minutes at 2000 and 1500 rpm, then shut her down to cool. Oil pressure kicked right up to 75 lbs and leveled off to 60 lbs after she got warmed up. No overheating. Will drop the oil and filter and will continue to use Valvoline Racing VR1 with zddp.

I am so happy.

Choke - we don't need no steenking choke...

Weeellll, I rigged a set of choke cables and tricked my neighbor over to be my choke guy. He was gun-shy because the last time he came over was to help me jerk a tranny. Swore he would never come back.

Maybe that is the origin of the expression, "Choke Hold."

Congratulations Bill!

I'm very happy to see this hurdle crossed and forward progress being made.

Thanx Paul. It's been a long time coming. With health issues in between. She now idles nicely, the TSI cam works really well. Nice little lope. Will drive over the weekend. Dropped the oil after 20 minutes of break-in. Will go another 500 miles and repeat.

That's my plan as well. I'm extremely happy that after 400 miles, I have not burned any oil at all. And it's as clean as the day it went in. Of course, this is the second oil and filter, the was first changed after a 20 minute run like you.

I'm going to switch over to the NAPA Gold oil filters on the next change, since I've used up my last two Fram's for the break in.

My only debate is whether to switch to the synthetic from the Rotella Triple T. Machinist says to go for it, so maybe I will.

Are you going to retorque the head then as well?

YAY! Congratulations, Bill.

I think I have 50lbs/in2 of oil pressure at 2000rpm ... is that too low?

Julian,

Yours is just fine. Don't get shipwrights disease reading these posts about new engine pressure and temp readings.

Julian, assuming you have either the original or otherwise very old oil pump, I would think what you have is about par for the course. Too low? Not really, for a stock engine. Swapping out for a new pump is no biggie. Just drop the pan and bolt her right up. Or, you could have a lot worse, like really worn bearing, etc. That is a biggie. Most tired tractor engines will run well enough if you don't try and race or do a lot of fast road driving.

Nah, that's plenty. Half that much is still enough, tho it's getting to be time to think about new bearings (or heavier oil).

Bill, I may have missed it but what cam did you put back in there after the old one cratered?

And did you ever really figure out what was the problem on the old one?

I put in Ted Schumacher's S2 cam, a slight bit more aggressive than the GP2 cam it replaced.

What caused it? Anyone's guess. After 5000 miles, it went out. My guess is I let some else drive my car. Meaning, and I am not really blaming someone else, it was hard-redlined for about 60 seconds on day in 2nd gear. After that, it never ran the same. Then wouldn't start easily. That is when I dropped the pan and looked underneath with a flashlight. And found shards of cam lobe in my oil. I think that the less-than hardened tappets + really weak valve springs + redlining caused the springs to float = disintegrated lifter and wiped out lobe. Good thing I dropped the pan, otherwise it coulda been worse.

When the new choke cable comes in Wednesday, I will drive her Friday on my day off.

That would be very unfair to blame it on the 60 seconds of hard red line in 2nd gear.

I might blame the first 20-30 seconds though.

There was a video floating around of someone WOT'ing their car engine in park and it only took about 15 seconds until KABOOM!

I think you were very fortunate that it was just the cam lobe.

I commend you on your tenacity on this job. Good work.
