Shake, Rattle & Hum... CONTEST!!

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

Yeah, I have to admit that after I brought the car home I just started driving it thinking I was a lucky dog to have such a good daily driver.

I still have to give everything a real good going over.
Hard when it's so rainy, cold, snow & hail out still.
I need a good sunny day and to get under there with the grease gun & the sockets & wrenches and get everything lubed & tightened.

Anyway, I'll have to take a picture of the things that were falling apart as they definitely had nothing to do with any sway bar attached to my car.

The scariest bits were the big nuts that were about to fall off. I've had a front end come apart on me at low speed (5 - 10 mph) so I know the feeling but having it happen on the freeway would not be pretty.

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

Bah, I don't need either of those shift knobs. It is the principle. In fact my next purchase in a couple of days is going to be a wood wheel and a matching wood shift knob.

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

A wood skull shift knob?

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

A Yorkshire Terror. LOL. The one in the Moss catalog with the Sprite emb enlayed in the top.

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

awww h e double toothpicks fellas.....my guess was the outer fulcrum bolt, the ones Rick is refering to are the INNER fulcrum bolts. I am just glad he caught it before there was a serious diaster and someone got hurt. The nuts that hold those pins on are supposed to be self locking, and should never be re-used. or should have cotter pins in them.

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

Hey Jack, My wife got me one of those as a stocking stuffer at Christmas. The quality of the inlay is disappointing. I assume it came from Moss, but I did not ask.

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

Thanks Mark, I will check to see if they can be pinned.
It was scary, but it really smoothed out when everything was tightened up!

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

If it ain't right it goes back to Moss. That is my and Tonys rule.

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

Jack, you were correct about the sway bar mounting bolts.
Did you also guess those inner fulcrum bolts/nuts?

I humbly apologize for my faulty memory and bow to your superior knowledge.

I have a couple pictures that will elucidate. The new nut bolt & lockwasher are hardened #8. Looks kinda brassy, I'm sure that will change with a little more driving.

Anybody think that joint in the second pic needs replacing or is that just a little outer tearing? It feels solid, no rattling around or anything.

"Did you also guess those inner fulcrum bolts/nuts?"

Never ever would have thought of that. Have never seen a nilock nut come off.

I would use that link and think about a replacement only if it becomes loose unless this were a race car or such. However, I would keep an eye on it from time to time.

Put those shifters on ebay, someone will be very pleased with them.

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

Thanks Jack,

I received my proper Midget shift knob yesterday.
When I went to replace the skull I found there's threaded 3/8 inch steel at the top of the shifter to which the skull is mounted. The Shift knob I received needs a much smaller post, something like 1/4 inch or maybe even 3/16.
Nothing is ever simple.

I could drill the top and tap it and insert a smaller stud.

I could get a different shifter. The bushing or whatever it is at the bottom of this one is shot anyway, it makes that constant noise as you are driving unless you lift it up 1/8 inch.

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

You do know there is supose to be a nut on the shifter to lock the shift knob in place?

Sounds like the ani rattle pin is worn out or missing.

Look at Moss page 28, #57, 58, 59, 60. Pull your shift lever and check it out. At the very least it needs cleaned.

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

Jack, He has a nissan transmission.

Trevor, are you sure about that?

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

Why would you put a Midget knob on a nissan transmission?

I know for a fact I have a Nissan engine.
I have no idea who made the transmission.
I know it's a four speed that has the reverse over to the right & down.

Where would I look for identifying marks to see who made the thing? If it's a Midget tranny, how would I be able to tell?

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

Why not go to the Nissan dealer and see what their shift knobs look like?

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

I just crawled under there & looked around.
There are no signs of anyone having retrofitted a tranny under there, it looks totally factory installed.

The engine mounts are another story, definite welding went on to get that thing in there & sitting square.

I've looked at the drawing in the moss catalog for the gearbox 1500 (page 30) and I don't see anything much different about mine. I will have to print it out and look more closely.

If someone has a picture of this gearbox from underneath that would really help.

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

a 1500 tranny has reverse to the right and up.

Re: Shake, Rattle & Hum...

It would make no sense to fit a Nissan engine then spend time and money making an inferior BMC gearbox fit.

but... I could be wrong.
