I was looking out at the woods behind me parents house last weekend and spotted a Buckeye tree. Even picked up a nut to replace the one my Aunt gave me years ago to carry for luck.

Is it a loose nut and bolt between the shock and wishbone?

Ok people, the clues were much more general that that - to be taken in & generate ideas rather than to spell out exactly what was the deal.

So... Clue:

What's the scariest bit you can think of to have come off your Spridget at 70 mph freeway driving? Or to discover in the act of working it's way off anyway?

I wouldn't be too happy with the wheel coming off. Or the hub. Or the suspension. Or the engine falling out. Or the gearbox. I once had a bolt come out of the front of the fan in my buick causing it to lean forward and hit the radiator, shattering the fan blades off and sending them around the engine bay. One almost pierced the hood, another wedged itself in the oil filter, only to dislodge while I was trying to get home. She bled out all over I-4...

Wouldn't like the brakes to come apart either. Or the steering wheel to come off in my hand. Or the... you get the idea!

Kingpin/trunnion nut?

The bolt/nut that connects the trunnion to the shock?


Brother had a TR6 that gave up a wheel the first time he drove it after assembling it from the crates he bought it in. He and my sister rounded a corner and thought, "Weird, was that a wheel that just rolled passed us?"

Speedy Pete, just about 12 inches and you got it.
It's between you & Trevor & Morris. None of you have quite got the right size socket on your wrench. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Now this is the kind of thing that everybody's going to say "but I said that 17 posts up".

I guess maybe I'm looking for a description of a specific set of circumstances that could have become a catastrophe if let go another day.
As it was it cost less than a dollar and 15 minutes of my time to make the repair.
Makes living across the street from a fully equipped hardware store seem like such a good idea - I can literally grab something & say "I'm going out to see if it fits" & we know each other so well that it just isn't a problem.

the scariest piece i can imagine would be the lower fulcrum bolt departing the lower a frame

I was thinking that, too. But I would think you would loose the special washer, too, and you can't get that at the hardware store.

Kind of freaked me out. More than just a little.

Think of how much vibration there would be if you lost a bolt or two down there and several of the larger nuts were loose.
That vibration would work it's way into the cockpit and the noise would seem to be coming from up around the dash where some resonant frequencies would be generated.
When the steering wheel started to vibrate along with it I really started to worry.

So - who is the winner? I'm the biggest winner as I found this & fixed it before it all fell apart & I had another fiery rolling end over end massive wreck.

I think Mark really has it.
The Nuts were still on there but just barely.
The little bolts marked at #2 - one of them was gone the other two were loose (if that's the right spot on the diagram).
The whole thing was about to simply fall apart.

Oh yeah - I went ahead and tightened up everything else under there that needed it while I was there.

you know, the scaryest peice would be the bolt that holds the stearing shaft to the rack, the one that keeps the shaft on the splines. That goes you gone. But do not see how that would make a noise.

But is not what is marked as 2 the attachment for the sway/roll bar??

Think I said loose sway bar some pages back.

That was the closest to what I saw.
I have three bolts going into that piece seem to be holding in the spring base. One was totally AWOL while the other two needed some talking to. They were not holding on the sway/roll bar. Sorry man.

Think those bolts loose would not concern me too much, but the others that hold the A frame on. Gesh. Now thats scary.

Those three holes you have marked are listed in the Moss catalog as Bracket, page 34 #53. Bracket is used to attach to the Link Page 35 # 52. Link attaches to sway bar, page 34 #50.

So the answer was the sway/roll bar assembly.

Sorry I left a word out "assembly" will try harder next time. lol

Oh yea that spring base you refer to is really a wishbone/spring pan. $200 plus bucks new. Into that is attached the spring seat with four bolts.

Little known fact: all the replacement pans come with the holes but the orginals did not unless a sway bar was a factory instalation.

Would have been nothin' lucky about THAT wishbone giving way /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/sick.gif !!! BTW when was the last time you checked the front end before you noticed the noise /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif ? Tip - eyeball all fasteners when lubing the front end (and check the lube regularly /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif !!)
