Setting the Distributor Drive Gear....

without the distributor. I am buttoning up my new 1275 motor while I still have a different 1275 in the car and running. I don't want to pull the dizzy so I can continue to drive the car and I don't have a spare. What would be the best way to set the dizzy drive gear from the cam so I can button this thing up? I won't be driving the car for a few months, shoulder surgery, and I am going to pull the dizzy and send it for rebuild while I recover.

The factory manual says specificly how to set the drive gear. Easy stuff.

Set the engine so the #1 cylinder is at TDC before the power stroke. Thread a 3" to 4" long 5/16-24 bolt into the drive gear. Note the offset of the slot in the drive gear (it isn't on center) and keep the large offset on top. Inset the drive gear so that the slot is at about a 45' angle keeping in mind that the gear rotates as you insert it. Take a look at the picture on page 2 of the attachment.

Perfect. Thanks

And every time I do this, it's 180 out.
Just keep that in mind, if you have a 50/50 chance, you will get it wrong 99% of the time
Of course, I can never tell which offset is which, it sure looks dead center to me.

It is not dead center. My solution is put it in correctly then reinstall 180 degrees from what I have. Works every time. Durn thing.
