Here in France there's a requirement to have the chassis number 'cold-stamped' onto the chassis or floor on the passenger side. I have brought over an MG from England for the Missus, and last week I put it through it's 'Controle Technique'. The guy doing the check was adamant that there should be a chassis number stamped somewhere on the passenger side of the car...he nearly failed it when he couldn't find it, so maybe your car had spent some time here?

The number in the floor is not a usual thing, but I know of at least one other BJ8 that has its chassis number (i.e., the numerical part of the VIN following HBJ8L/) stamped into the passenger's floor. I do not know how to post a photo here, but I do have a picture of it. The other car is still with its original owner, in Canada.

tried looking today, but the sound insulation is glued/adhering pretty solidly to the metal and what little of the floor I saw didnt' have a number.

I once had a 100/6 with the number ( not the whole VIN ) stamped on the bracket that held the bonnet (hood) stay. I would not be surprised if numbers were stamped in a load of places on an original, especially the early cars.
