I bought a new gas tank (with no drain hole) and sending unit from Moss a couple of years ago and the sending unit has failed. I did not fill the tank with gas this winter, but am not sure how much is in there (kind of a "catch 22, huh?) and was wondering if the sending unit can be removed without spillage or how to tell before removing it. any ideas are welcome!
 
There was a period a couple years ago when Moss stopped selling sending units because they had quality problems...those have been solved now.

Jack the passenger side up in the air to force whatever gas to the driver side & remove the sending unit.
 
Have a pan handy just in case it's over half full, but do it the way Tony suggested and you'll likely be fine. Use Hylomar or Form-a-Gasket on reinstall, not RTV (it will dissolve on contact with gasoline).
 
OK...thanks, guys. I guess I will give her a go the next time it gets warm enough to back her out of the garage and jack her up in the driveway. Once I figure out why the speedometer stoped working I will order that, a new sending unit, gasket, and whatever else I need for the spring awakening.
 
Dont think I have ever had a car without a drain plug on the gas tank!
You could always use a piece of garden hose down the filler cap and syphon most of the fuel out
 
If you siphon the tank, make sure you get the hose into the deep part of the tank. I just removed my tank and just because the tube hit bottom I thought I had most of the gas out. Only to find out, after I broke it loose, it still had four or more gallons in it. Fortunately I had it supported with a jack and was able to remove it without spilling it. Let us know how it goes! :lol:

Should you always do this? I've installed two in the past few months and did'nt do it that way but also do not fill the tank all the way.
 
Did you use a sealant? It really isn't ~necessary~ as the gasket is fairly "compressable" BUT: it can't hurt, either. Just so it WASN'T RTV.
