Tell you what I don't like about this. It lays some groundwork for exception to vehicle emmissions testing. Something we do NOT have in Florida (or at least most of Florida).

They've slowly been pushing for Florida to copy California's "example" of emissions standards and testing. After reading about the woes of some of the folks on the forums from California, I'm not all that happy about it...but it looks as if this at least exempts my MGB and my TD replica (I'll be darned if I'll let myself be conned into titling my 69 VW as a 52 MGTD though!)

The occasional-use thing isn't new though. When we had antique-car plates those cars were supposed to be only used occasionally and for special events too. I don't think it was taken too seriously, but you weren't supposed to use them for commuting or daily driving. Sounds like they're bringing those plates back as well.

Can you imagine the regulators frustration when they try to find fuel economy numbers for the tires that come from the factory on new Model T Fords?

Heck, they'd just say it's the owner's responsibility to find out before they're allowed to the drive the car.

I wouldn't mind seeing brush guards banned as they serve no purpose other than cosmetic and are nothing more than a damage multiplier in a minor accident to the vehicle equipped with them. I'm actually surprised the insurance companies haven't pushed for it.

The rest are just plain dumb.

And whats up with the smog folks on the freeway on ramps? Never seen that before in southern california.
 
nope, me neither, but then I've read that they're thinking about it...
 
ah... hmmmm... well, I look at it this way, it'll snag those people that "mod" their new cars because they think they have 6 years before they have to do a smog test...

it's Big Brother'ish if ya ask me...

AH! OK, that's different from what I was thinking of. I ~knew~ about the portable sniffers even if I'd never seen one in use. I also recall reading about the "roadside emissions surveys" while I was boning up on my California registration requirements.

The thing I was thinking of was some "automated" system that sniffed your car as you waited at the light on an "on ramp". This automated system would then notify you (possibly even give you a citation) if you failed. I believe the article I read this in was attempting to make a suggestion on how to do away with the bi-annual Smog test. Unfortunately, the writer of said article fails to realize that there are quite a few people that live near freeways, and these people would invariably fail the smog test every time because their cars would not be fully warmed up before they hit the on ramps.
 
The "Smog Gestapo" always sets up shop at one certain intersection in St. Paul, MN during the annual "Back To The Fifties" car show. They get a kick out of publicizing high smog readings while the streets are clogged each night with "crusiers".

The problem is most of these "cruisers" are NOT the hot rodders that attend the show but rather John Q Public type wannabes.

Several years ago a group of rodders offered to have their cars "smog checked" to see how much polution they made..they all passed the smog test! Amazing since these were non-smaog engines without any pollution equipment. But I didn't see any of the test results publicized by the EPA...
