Selling on Bring a Trailer?

So - when Craigslist and Ebay seem to lead to dead ends, has anyone actually listed *and sold* a car on Bring a Trailer auctions?

The listings are usually "talked to death" in comments by knowing (?) car guys. And it costs $250 to list on BaT for a week. And Bat gets a *lot* of viewers.

But do the cars actually sell?

Or is it just a way for BaT to get another $250?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Thanks.
Tom M.

I don't know by ads here are free and IF they sell from your ad, you can pay a small fee IF you want to, but it's not required. If only we could get the kind of traffic BAT gets.

Thanks Basil. As the car isn't British, it shouldn't go on BCF. When I sold my TR3 I listed here, and donated to BCF! But alas, I doubt folks seeking non-British cars would look here.

BaT is like the "Beavis and Butthead" of car sites. Half the fun was the commentary, just like Beavis and Butthead would do with the music videos (Or Mystery Science Theater 3000 if you'd rather go that route). It originally just featured ads of unusual, unique or sought-after cars. Then they went into business on their own and have made quite a name for themselves. Good for them.

I post comments there, even though there's less than a snowball's chance in that warm place "down there" that I could ever purchase something. (Besides, I'm still holding out for an MGA project). It's fun, but it's certainly not the BCF by any stretch of the imagination.

Thanks. I sure agree about it not being a BCF. Many of the BaT comments are way over the top, each guy trying to outdo the others in nit picking.

I'm just wondering if anyone here has used BaT for selling - and how it went.

I have a friend who is a true car nut who swears by BaT - he has bought and sold repeatedly - and says, it is like selling to a huge car club. His take on Ebay is that there are to many tire kickers scams and wannabes - but has nothing but good things to say about Bat - especially around people honouring their bids.

I have a suspicion that they censor some of the comments,
as I've made many (most positive),that never show up.
I've noticed that some of the cars (K cars, etc.) seem to rarely
get a negative comment, but are hated by many.

Never bought or sold at a BaT auction, but as a long-time commenter I have a few observations. It's great for buyers, lots of people with experience that can pick out a car's shortcomings. If I was interested in a marque I didn't have much knowledge about, the comments would help in making a decision. For sellers, if you have a good solid car, the comments will show it. But if you have a car with needs, better be upfront about them or the commenters will stone the car. Looks like they present to a good audience with cash to spend.

Thanks Jay. I have been checking on the details. Seems a "hit or miss" situation, where many of the cars listed don't sell. Maybe because the reserve was set too high by the seller? That might be why BaT encouraged me to list "with no reserve".

Onward through the fog!
Thanks.

A good friend of mine has bough and sold cars on BAT. With the one he sold he was realistic about the asking price, and he got lucky when it sold for more than he was expecting. That said, it is a auction so it always depends on who's in the "room" when the auction is going on.

I do like that there is no hard time limit on the auctions -- the time will extend for a few minutes after the last bid so there's time if you were outbid and want to bid more. They're one of the very few auction sites I would use.
