TR2/3/3A Selling Frustration - TR3

I've bought and sold cars on eBay and when selling always lead off with a line something like "I am not a broker or dealer and I am not 'selling this car for a friend'... I am just the guy who has driven and maintained this car for the past X years and am now ready to part with it."

Keep the text simple and the pictures beautiful. A good salesman knows when to stop talking and let the product speak for itself.

Oh, and no need to lose the stereo, but a good hot (and discreet) connection can be had at the fuse block.

There is a TR3a on ebay currently (200126075719)that appears to be headed for the price your looking for...how do you feel you stack up with it? Same color as yours.

Well, he/she has nicer pictures...
Color - mine is greyer and darker;
Paint is 1 year old on mine, but looks of similar quality; his was a body on resto as well
His sidescreens are nicer - mine are new, but not original style
He has 72 spoke chrome, mine are 60 spoke painted, plus steel
That engine bay is way, way prettier than mine; componenet to component though we have had the same work done, except I have new steering and a new distributor,
He has a new head, I have new sleeves, pistons and bearings;
His underside looks newer and cleaner than mine, both are solid (his diff seems to be dripping..
His dash is original, mine is custom
His wipers don't work; my speedo doesn't
His interior is newer than mine...
All in all, I would have expected his car to fetch a better price than mine (mainly because of that engine shot) - however, he is very near what i would have taken for mine and he has not reached his reserve yet...worth watching, thanks for the tip,
Kerry

Hi There Kerry;

Well; I`m "NOT" going to beat a Dead Horse to Death!

Somewhere back on this thd or another like it; I mentioned cleaning up the Engine Bay; More Detail in the Little Places and Little Things:

What this shows is the "Pride & Love" you have for your Car: Therefore; The Potential Buyer can physically see that & will know that you`ve taken care of your Car & will feel more comfortable and "Confident" in the Purchase of Your Beloved LBC:

You may be seeing My TR4 in the Very Near Future up For Sale on various Club Sites & If not Sold to a LBC Lover there, Then Ebay here she comes:

I`m considering buying a TR3A: I`ll know Tomorrow for sure: I`m probably making a mistake by Selling My Perfectly Good Running, Good Looking TR4A-IRS but I Love the "Nostaglia" of driving a TR3 (Had a `58):

Best Wishes;

PS: When you re-post on ebay; Take a look to see how many 3`s are on there: "Less Competition" the Better: Right now there are quite a few:

Kerry I don't know if you are a member of the Ottawa triumph Club, but the club mag. (and monthly meetings)might be a good place to offer your car to local buyers.
Also might suggest the Kingston area, as I think there is a non-marque specific LBC club there.
Finally, perhaps the website of thge Toronto Triumph Club, which gets a lot of hits.
Good Luck!

Kerry,
I can't believe that with patience you won't get your price. And since you really don't want to sell it anyway, keep a solid price and await a proper offer using all the venues that are available. If one buyer does not think your car is worth a certain price, another buyer will. You just need to be at the right place at the right time...

Patience and Perserverance will work in the end.

Also... when I sell on eBay I think about what time the auction will end. You don't want the final bidding to be at 3:00 am on a Tuesday.

I like to end on a Sunday afternoon that does not feature a major sports event (something tedious like baseball, golf or NASCAR is okay). I try for a time that puts it in late afternoon East coast, early afternoon West coast.

Hey I love baseball... I'm just saying I can watch it and do 2 other things at the same time.

I would add... the underbody shots scare me a little. But they are angles that I would *definitely* want to see if I were a prospective buyer.

Slapping on a thick layer of undercoat to hide everything would be the dishonest way to go. As an alternative, I would suggest treating any surface rust with a rust converter / neutralizer.

As to the colour, I'm in complete agreement with you that it is a plus, rather than a detractor. The world doesn't need any more "Resale Red" cars. I think it's lovely & distinct.

Best,
Duncan

Kerry --

I was chatting this a.m. with a friend who purchased an AC Ace out of Canada. Apparently it makes a big difference in US excise tax if the car has been previously registered in the US... i.e. the tax is pretty steep (12 -15%) if the car has never been registered in the US.

I mention this as I do not know where you got the car from but if it was from the US you might mention this in your ad as it may simplify or reduce the cost of repatriating it.

A US buyer may also encounter state taxes but you can hardly answer questions about that as those will vary based on where (and how) the buyer registers the car.

Thanks folks,
I do appreciate most of the advice here. The uderside is solid - i have no idea why the POs painted the oil pan red once a and i think blue another time.
I think i am going to rely on getting someone here to see the car. it is far better in person than shows on those photos, and i am more comfortable selling a vehicle that the buyer has seen.
there is a car show this weekend and I have three proseptive buyers coming up from Toronto over the next few weeks to check it out - I am not too worried. Plus there is a car show this weekend that should get some good exposure.
Thanks for the tip on the excise tax - I think this is the first time I`ve been aware of the US folks getting taxed more than we do here in Canada (only 6% duty in additional to provincial taxes).
I also have a persistant bugger who keeps calling me saying he has a buyer for me, I just need to front him $200 bucks. I said to bring me the buyer and I would be happy to pay him a finders fee..
Cheers and thanks,
Kerry
(Will post when all is said and done)

"I also have a persistant bugger who keeps calling me saying he has a buyer for me, I just need to front him $200 bucks. I said to bring me the buyer and I would be happy to pay him a finders fee.."
Yeah Right?!?.... offer the "PB" $400.00 if he can also run up the offer to his "buyer"

Boy, It takes All Kinds:

I can`t believe someone has the Gall to want $$$ as a finders fee; "Up Front"; before the Sale even happens:

Good Move in telling him to send the Buyer over & when sold; Then, "Maybe", a finders fee:

Check out my TR4A in the Classifieds & Let me know what you think?

My Post reads: "TO SELL OR NOT TO SELL": That`s the Question:

See Ya Later;

Best Wishes; Russ /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/winner1.gif
