Selecting the Correct Clutch

I am searching for a new clutch for my 72 TR6. My research has indicated that the Borg & Beck clutch which is my current clutch requires more pressure to operate than the Laycock. This added pressure requirement often leads to a sticky clutch and throw-out bearing failure. The original (RHP)bearing does not have a good reputation for reliability and many people advised to stay away from it. From what I have read, many Triumph owners are happy with the "Magic Clutch" sold by TRF. This clutch can be ordered with either the Koyo bearing or the new german Gunst bearing. I have read good and bad reports. Since I am a now a little confused about the whole subject, does anyone have any first hand experience in dealing with a successful clutch combination? Which throw out bearing is the best one? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks Guys.

I went with the Magic clutch kit with no problems. I also considered the Gunst bearing but after hearing the good and bad I didn't want to take a 50/50 chance on a job that size.

I have the magic clutch kit from TRF with the Gunst bearing and it feels a little bit better then the original Laycock clutch. Pedal pressure seems to be very high so I'm in the process of converting over to the .75 bore master clutch cylinder. I was also using the Dot 5 fluid which always leaked out of the slave cylider so now I'm moving back to the Dot 4.

My experiences may help you decide and to save some of the money that I wasted. Let the buyer beware. Magic Kit and Koyo on the NEW TRF polished bronze sleeve would be GREAT. Stay away from that other thing.

Thanks for the input. Paul, that is a great documented restoration job you have done; very nice. Thank you all for the responses. I hope to have an attack plan in place early next week.

My apologies for running with this 'off topic' part a little...

DOT 5 or DOT 5.1? If your using DOT 5, which is silicon based, you should replace your whole clutch hydraulics before changing to DOT 4. You should be fine if you were using the DOT 5.1

I had a link about this on one of my other computers. If I find it I'll post it.

Also while your at it......re-bush the cross shaft and check the shaft for wear.Put in front and rear seals in the trans (if over 10 yrs old.)Get the adjustable rod for the slave!!!Check the pins that hold the release sleeve/just get new ones!!Install a fresh pilot bearing and have the flywheel faced, pitch the old hardware, go with new grade 8 bolts.Did you remember the stainless steel fork bolt???Good man!!!
