TR4/4A Second Gear Bushing

I am trying to gather parts for a repair on my TR4A gearbox and I am searching for a top hat bushing for second gear. It seems that the steel bushings are not available and will not be for a while. I have found a bronze bushing from Moss and a brass bushing from Rimmer Brothers. I just assumed that it would be bronze. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of brass vs bronze? Thanks

I'm sure they are the same bushings, but many people can't get it straight. Usually they are bronze, as I understand it. Bronze generally has better strength and wear characteristics than brass alloys.

Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin, often with other elements to improve its hardness and tensile strength. Brass is fundamentally an alloy of copper and zinc. There are lots of different flavors of both, depending on the tin/zinc content and other minor alloying elements.

Thanks, I thought that might be the case but the price is $90 at Moss and $47 at Rimmer Brothers. That is about the normal difference between the two companies. I will call Rimmer Brothers and ask about the material.

If done properly either will work. Bronze has a slight high temperature advantage.

I think you will find there is more to it than just swapping out the bronze/brass for the steel. The flange on the steel bushing is thinner than the bronze and requires a thicker spacer to make up for that. I believe it also has a dedicated 2nd main shaft gear which may affect your 2nd gear on the lay shaft.
