I took the car out on Sunday. Went about 50 miles. After about 40 miles my back was absolutely killing me. I could not do anything.

The car is a 74, I have no particular interest in putting Maita seats in there for a couple of reason, the main one being my understanding is there is no adjustable lumbar available.

I also understand that someone add adjustable lumbar to the original seats, I was wondering what other opinions were out there concerning the seats and the possibility of adding adjustable lumbar to the stock seats. Yes I have posted this in the past. Things have gotten worse concerning my back. My wife and I have owned the car for almost thirty years, we spent our honey moon in the car so I would prefer to fix the cheap seat problem. Your help and opinions would be appreciated.
 
I would recommend early seats from a 58-64 Spridget. I find them much more supportive and comfortable when compared to the later seats. They give you more interior room too.

When I selected the car, on the web site it indicated it would not fit a 74 Midget. I think the suggestion as a whole would work and probably requires more research. I was wondering about the person who had added the lumbar support to OEM seats.
They also indicate they require 21" of space there is only 19 at the base.
 
We have a guy in our local MG club that has MS and back troubles stemming from it. His chiropractor sold him an adjustable removable lumbar support that he swears by. The chiropractor came out to his car and adjusted it to fit him and his MGB seats. I think he said it cost him $69. Susan and I are planning to pick up a pair before the 2000+ mile trip to Elkhart Lake next June. You might want to check with a chiropractor near you for something similar.
 
I just did a complete rebuild of my factory seats ('74).
There are areas where you can add additional padding and
support, but not a lot. I, too, have three bad discs so
I understand. I don't see any way you are going to modify
the factory seats and get the support you need. When I can
no longer drive my car, I will do a seat swap (that can be
converted back). It kills me to say that because I REALLY
like original, and don't stray from factory often.

I have pics of my seat rebuild if it would help in your decision.

Kim (regularman) has installed an adjustable lumbar support in his car. That being said, I drove with a round lumbar support pillow with a velcro strap to attach to the seat, made all the difference in the world and may have cost $20

The drivers seat in my 78 Midget is breaking down, I can feel the frame on the inner side of the back. What's the easiest and most $$ friendly way to fix this?
I spent a lot of money on my Sprite seats and they look really great but my Midget needs a comfy seat especially for the drive to Elkhart lake next summer.
Don't mean to hijack this thread, but it seems we are asking very similar questions.
 
Hay Rick the best seat to drive it Elkhart is in my truck with the midget on a trailer. Oh yea that's the A/C switch down there. LOL

Yeah I'll be pretty happy with my zip down rear window - I'm sure it will seem luxurious. I'll have to do something to direct outside air to the vent (heater flaps). Also have to make sure it's running well enough to bypass the heater.
Of course that's just a small part of my checklist of things to take care of before the trip.
 
Just for reference, my car has original seats and foam.

my friend with the same year car redid his seats with new foam, and the difference between his seat and mine is HUGE. his seat offers a lot more support than my old original seat. I sit about 3-4 inches higher in his car, the new foam makes that much of a difference

if you are looking to try something cheap and rather easy, I would order new foam and see if that solves your problem.
