Seat belts

Seatbelt or not - from what I could tell (slow-mo BTW) the driver of the Roadster would have been in a hurt locker regardless.

Another thought - Look at the nasty hits those Motorcycle riders took from their bikes. Now imagen what'd be like if that wasn't a bike but a car?

Or taking a little "dirt-nap".

Nice! just watched it with me kids. They dig it. Never heard so many oohs ahhs & ohhhhs.

'Tragic' might a more appropriate adjective.

What are your thoughts on seat belts in a convertible w/o a roll bar or a windscreen that is firmly attached?

Are you one of the "thrown clear" crowd?
Or would you rather have yer butt strapped to a rolling car?

I'm definitely for seatbelts, period. How many accidents are rollovers versus headons, side impacts etc, especially in small, low COG cars? I'll bet the rollovers are a very small percentage. How would you like to be thrown into your steering wheel and windscreen at 60 mph when your car suddenly stops but your body doesn't?

I hear a lot of "testimonials" from folks who say that "I was in such-and-such kind of accident, and if I had been wearing a belt I would have died." But you never hear anyone say, "I was in such-and-such kind of accident, and if I had been wearing a belt I would have lived." The picture from the testimonials is a little one-sided..... ;-)

I have been in 3 major car accidents. The cars were equiped w/ seatbelts but no airbags. Not one of them was a rollover. I walked away from 2 of them. The 3rd I was released after 18hours in the hospital. The most serious injury I suffered was sore back, neck, and bruised ribs. In all of them, I was driving and wearing my seatbelt. I am alive today because of them.

Driving without a seatbelt is sheer stupidity.

In a head on....I'd be in trouble.

My steering wheel hub has the mark in relief.

Suppose my corpse would be somewhat of a curiosity at the morgue.

"What's that stamped on his forehead?"

"Looks like some kinda writing......Backwards......Maybe Russian?"

"Get a mirror."

"It says ELVA???"

I wear my seatbelt everytime I get in any of my cars... but, it was interesting to see the reactions from my response. Yes, a seatbelt can save you... but having worked in a funeral home for the past 13 years... I have seen people come through that had their seatbelt on. I've heard the dead say "it didn't matter". But with that said... It is much safer to wear them... I'd have to say that the car wrecks in which people died wearing seatbelts (outside of one or two - don't ask), they wouldn't have had a chance at living either way.

I can’t recall where I got the data but a while back during one of those anti SUV/Truck debates - the usual comments about rollovers came up. While its obvious that they have a higher center of gravity (natural product of the design for its intended usage) they can roll over. Anyway doing some research I discovered that the some normal passenger car vehicles actually have a higher death rate in a rollover than most Trucks & SUVs.

The worst I discovered (cant recall the actual year) was the GM F-Body Cameros & Firebirds convertibles. That during a rollover they have an almost 100% death rate. In-other-words during every rollover of an F-Body convertible someone died. Now I don’t recall any data on how many folks had the seat belts on in these rollovers – but having driven a number of these, it seems to me that you’d have to be getting pretty crazy in order to flip one as they’re not exactly bad handling cars. Now it should be noted that if you exclude rollovers from the F-Body’s accident data they are a relatively safe vehicle and offer plenty of protection to the driver & passengers during regular head-on, side & rear-end collisions.

My point is regular seat belts aren’t intended for this sort of extreme situation and if a driver insists on pushing his or her vehicle to extremes then they should consider improving the vehicle with a true roll cage and taking it to the track.
