Rut roh, Seagate facing class action lawsuit over high hard drive failure rate.

I have a 2012 Seagate 3TB desk top drive but it is not of the variants mentioned here. It has been running continuously since August 2012. It is the home for my iTunes Movie and music collection (extensive), but I do have it backed up on a RAID Drive just in case.
 
I've had a couple Seagates fail on me. Fairly new ones. The external one had a plastic case with no vents so I believe heat was the killer. The internal one, no idea why it failed. I've been using mostly Hitachi Deskstars with good reliability so far. These were originally IBM, bought by Hitachi, now owned by Western Digital. Haven't bought one that is under the WD umbrella.

I use Mostly Western Digital, but I also have 2TB iOSafe (Fireproof, waterproof) for archive/backup of important items. I think it used an internal Hitachi drive.
 
Uh oh.....I just had a Western Digital 1TB backup drive die....and I replaced it with a Seagate. :grief:
 
Seagate's "Barracuda" series seem to have lasted well, some still going after over a decade. Haven't used Seagate drives in any recent builds, tho.

WD "Black" series are being hailed as reliable. Have put a few in machines locally, not been in use long enough to determine if the advertizing is right. We shall see.

A similar class action suit was filed against Fuji a number of years ago, we'd had a couple of those crash after a short time. Filed the numbers with all concerned but never saw a dime from the suit. <shrug>
