Screaming "Chain"

I got to open the Healey up a little bit on the back roads with the other LBCs at the Vintage Grand Prix two weekends ago.

I really enjoyed myself and I think the car did too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

One of the other drivers, that I passed, mentioned that I really had a “screaming chain” in that engine. On reflection, he’s onto something.

The car has 56,000 miles; I’ve been through the car, over the winter, with a very experienced mechanic who also has considerable racing experience. We’ve adjusted the valves and it sounds and acts pretty tight. However, at “speed”, say 70+ MPH or so, with the tach flirting with the mid-range of the yellow zone, there’s a screaming chain noise. It’s reminiscent of the chain noise the Volkswagen beetles used to make, but much higher pitched and much faster.

Oil pressure runs just under 60 lbs, hot, with 10w50, compression tests, earlier in the year, were all about 120-125, as I recall.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Can't put a spot light on it, But FWIW:

Timing chain oiler misadjusted/partially blocked
Timing Chain Damper Worn
Timing chain Tensioner Worn
Timing Chain worn
Crank shaft oil thrower Reversed or spinning on shaft

We were at the Vintage GP in the Glen also. Have been at every one since it started.
Which Healey was yours? Color Etc.
We had the 67 3000 Red over Black with Heritage interior and sunfast top. Stayed at Glenora Inn.
Will look for you next year.
Sorry to hear about problems. May they be minimal.

R&M,

Red BJ8, all original, ran the Knapp vineyard "tour" It was at the first stop that the high pitched noise was mentioned as described above.

Was at the "antique" auto show at the track, between a beautiful black 100 and a nicely restored red 3000 from PA., I think.

Beautiful weekend.

Thanks Keoke, I'm hoping I won't have to get into the engine until the long dark winter...
