Yesterday my wife and I had grandparents day at or oldest grandsons four year old school class. She drove from her job to my VW shop and we piled in the B and drove the less than a mile to the church. Half way there the thing started screaming. Basically coasted in to the parking lot, popped the hood and the alt. was rather hot. Did our thing at the school, came out and fired it up and raced to the shop. Luckily I keep lots of spares...of everything. Think thats from 40 years of owning British and German cars. Anyhow...two hours later it was re-bearinged and quiet again.

Nice to have spares. Think we all have a bit of a stash. But being in the business, sigh. You got us mostly beat I bet.

Yeah Jack...but too much stuff can be as bad as no stuff. 20 years of Air Force moving and when I retired I hoarded...and still am. I use dead VW buses and other cars for MG storage. I have more dual carbs and manifold set-ups than anyone needs, tons of engine and trans stuff....lots of body parts etc. Today I may start the thinking process of converting my 76 B from non o/d to o/d..have all the stuff..just lack ambition,, plus I just bought a 77 VW camper and a late 66 VW Kombi bus..all over the past week-end. Have to get those ready to sell first.

I'm thinking about OD also. It's just a cashflow thingy right now. Just spent $1300 yesterday on a crown that fell out. OUCH!

What is the going price for an OD? My current tranny for the '67 BGT is a '68 that the PPO installed. So I think I can take a later one as well as early.

Depends. I've seen unknown condition early overdrive gearboxes go from $250 to $750. Fully reconditioned units go for $900-$1500. THey ain't cheap to rebuild, that's for sure!

Extra parts - now you guys know how I got into my used parts "hobby"....
